A 36-year-old Nashville woman faces two shoplifting counts and a felony criminal-simulation charge after Mt. Juliet police say she used a fake driver's license to return stolen merchandise at two stores.
The Mt. Juliet Police Department said employees at Academy Sports recognized the woman on Thursday, Oct. 29, from an internal "be on the lookout" notice tied to fraudulent returns at numerous stores, according to Wilson County Source. Officers responded to a shoplifting call at the store that evening.
Police located the woman's vehicle nearby and stopped it after spotting a broken taillight and a shattered windshield. During the investigation, officers determined she had made a fraudulent return of $378 worth of stolen merchandise at Academy Sports, the department said.
Police said further investigation showed the woman had earlier visited Ross in the Providence area, where she fraudulently returned $438 worth of stolen merchandise before heading to Academy Sports. Officers determined she had used a fraudulent driver's license during the return process, police said.
In a statement, the department credited both its officers and Academy Sports staff for identifying the suspect. The Mt. Juliet Police Department also posted about the case on X.
"Their awareness and willingness to work with law enforcement played an important role in this investigation," the department said.
